I Will Not Be Struck
We see the image of Chanie’s teacher in the classroom. We have seen other adults in the school throughout the film. Why do you think the artist chose to never show the faces of the adults in the school?
I think that the reason for them leaving out the faces is because they could be that they didn’t know what they looked like or that it was so traumatizing that they didn’t remember their faces but the actions that they did.
For a recap of what has happened so far in the story ‘The Secret Path’.
The beginning: You see him walking on a railroad track and not in warm clothes while it was winter then you see it change to him getting his hair cut by a priest, powder, and shampoo in his hair, showering with other little boys, and then seeing him in a bed that they gave him.
The next chapter: You start by seeing him on a swing with two other boys swinging on the swings, they then see a girl trying to run away and the priest catching her. The little girl is crying and screaming while Chanie is asking (who is presumably his friend) “now” repeatedly and his friend saying not yet the priest then drags the girl into the school and then the friend spins him around and then let’s go while he and the other friend run, Chanie is spinning and then he jumps off and runs with the boys.
The third chapter: you see him and what is presumably the other boys’ parents and they give a map and 7 matches in a small glass jar with a broken lid and he makes sure to keep them dry and as he is walking down the train tracks, he is using them, and then they progressively get used until at the very end you see him with the last match.
The Fourth chapter: you see him in front of the flame of the last match and you see him with the map that he had and he was squinting to see but then there is a flashback to the school and the letters moving and it goes back and you can see the same thing is happening to the map and he throws it in the fire because he could not read it and then after that he lays down on the track and curls up to keep himself warm.
